Frequently asked questions about ceramics

What is ceramics made of?

Ceramics are made from clay that contains various minerals, including quartz and feldspar. There are different types of clay that have different properties and when fired in a pottery kiln, at temperatures between 1000°-1300°, they harden into a stone-like product called ceramic.

Can you make ceramics at home?

Yes and no. It is not possible to burn ceramic clay in a regular kiln as it needs to be fired at very high temperatures. However, you can create and shape clay at home and submit it for firing in a pottery studio. For example, we offer DIY kits for creating ceramics at home and memberships for those who want to create more regularly at home and want to glaze your creations themselves.

What is the difference between ceramics and pottery?

Ceramics is the finished product of what you have created from clay. Turning is one of the different techniques you can use to shape clay, where you sit at a wheel and create while the wheel spins. If you want to try turning, you can do it at one of our turning workshops !

Are stoneware and ceramics the same thing?

Partly! Stoneware is one of the three subcategories of clay that when fired becomes ceramic. There is also earthenware and porcelain and they all have slightly different properties and are fired at different temperatures in the kiln. Earthenware is often fired at 1000-1100°, stoneware and porcelain are fired around 1200-13000°.

What is mission?

After turning, for example, mugs and plates, you let the clay dry for a day or so until the clay becomes more stable. How long the clay needs to dry before it is ready depends on the humidity in the room, how well it is wrapped in plastic and how thick it is. You know it is ready when it holds its shape but still easily gets marks if you press a nail against it. To finish, you place your creations back on the lathe, usually upside down, to tidy up the bottom and sides. This is done with the help of various tools that cut away the clay, including miters, turning irons and rasps.
