About ceramics
What is ceramics, exactly?
It's made from clay and becomes ceramic when fired at several hundred degrees. But it's so much more than that. Ceramics are one of the oldest ways humans have shaped their environment – literally. From bowls to eat out of to works of art to look at. You take something as basic as soil and water, shape it with your hands, and suddenly you've created something that can actually last forever (or at least in the dishwasher).
There is more than one way to shape clay
Is your image of pottery making a bit like something out of the movie Ghost? There are actually lots of other ways to work with clay. You can roll, roll, thumb – or just sculpt freely. It’s often easier to get started at the table than at the slab, and the feeling of shaping something from scratch? It’s pretty unbeatable, regardless of technique.
From lump of clay to finished work
Creating with clay requires a bit of patience. First you shape it. Then it dries. Then it's fired for the first time. Then you glaze it. And then it's fired again. It may sound complicated, but we think it's rather charming. Everything takes its time – and when you finally stand there with your finished work in your hand, it feels like a small victory. Why ceramics?
Because it's fun. Because it's real. Because you can feel with your hands that something is being made. It's creative, it's liberating, and it's a perfect way to pause your head for a moment. Whether you want to make a mug for someone you like, a sculpture that no one understands, or just see what happens – there's a place for it. Welcome.
