Frequently asked questions about pottery kits

What kind of clay is in your kits?

We use stoneware clay, a clay that is fired in a real ceramic kiln at about 1250 degrees. When fired at that temperature, it becomes very durable and basically completely waterproof in itself. With a glaze on it, it can be used for food and drink without any problems. For the painting kits, it is instead earthenware objects. They are fired at a slightly lower temperature, do not become completely waterproof in themselves, but everything you paint on is dipped in a transparent glaze, which makes them completely safe to use for edible things.

Can I use air-drying clay for mugs and saucers?

No, not that it will be food safe, unfortunately. That's why we recommend that you use real ceramic clay (which we offer in our DIY kits) when you want to create at home if you want your creations to work for food and drink.

I've never tried working with clay before, how do I do it?

In all our kits we include a small brochure that goes through the most important things you need to know. For the ceramics kits you get guidance with text and pictures on how to use the most common techniques such as thumbing, squiggling and rolling. For the painting kit a guide is included that goes through how to think when painting, how many layers of paint are needed and tips and tricks.
